The Black Scrolls of Fu Leng

While the armies of the Kami were great, and the Kami themselves held divine power, this would not be enough to defeat Fu Leng. During his time in Jigoku Fu Leng absorbed much of the malefic power into himself. His bloated body stank of corruption and even the combined might of the Kami could not defeat him.

During their training by Shinsei, some of the more powerful shugenja created a set of twelve mystical scrolls that would be used to imprison Fu Leng in the Shadowlands forever. These scrolls held unimaginable power and over-whelming evil within them, for if the power of these scrolls were to ever fall into the wrong hands the Dark One would be set free.

By the combined power of the scrolls and their own swords, the Kami forced Fu Leng into submission. He would be in an eternal slumber deep within the Shadowlands. The power of the scrolls did have their price. Alone the scrolls were not enough to defeat Fu Leng, and it took the ultimate sacrifice by the Kami to subdue him. The Kami used their own divine life force to power the spell, and sacrificed their immortal lives to defeat him.

After the battle, Shosuro of the Scorpion clan took the scrolls to hide them from future generations. The care of these scrolls was the responsibility of the Scorpion Yogo family. Their mastery of Kuwasu (ward magic) made them perfect candidates for the honor.

Over the generations, time and war did not set well upon the scrolls. By the reign of Hantei the 38th, the Yogo family only possessed four of the original twelve. It is believed that the Phoenix "found" three others. The whereabouts of the remaining five scrolls is unknown.
